Hunting Island SC

2555 Sea Island PKWY

Hunting Island SC 29920

Hunting Island in South Carolina, has five miles of beaches, thousands of acres of marsh and maritime forest, a saltwater lagoon, and an ocean inlet. The entire island is a state park. There was wildlife everywhere, even in November. It got chilly at night, but when walking on the beach was able to wear short sleeves easily.

Lots of shells on the beach to pick up and no jellyfish. Yay!

An additional attraction is the Hunting Island lighthouse, built in 1859 which is constructed of interchangeable cast-iron sections. You can see the lighthouse in the distance from the campsite beach access area. It is only a short brisk walk away.

The most amazing thing we saw was called Bone Island, where dead trees remain standing bleached from the sun in an area where the tide comes in/out. Great place for photos.

Campsites have water and electrical hookups, shower and restroom facilities, a laundry area, a great campsite store with lots of items including eggs, bacon, ice, collectibles, t-shirts, etc... quiet beach walkways (at least in November), and lots of wildlife. Has a minimum of two nights reservation.

Tent campsites are right on the beach, you can hear the waves just past the sand dunes. The beach was dog friendly, with the exception of a short area blocked for protected bird habitat. We did notice ticks on the dogs after walking the trails, so be sure to bring appropriate protection for those.

The only downside we noticed was the camping playground floods at high tide, and so did the campsite next to it. This did not affect our trip, but wanted to share in case you have children. Some sites are private with trees blocking your neighbor, some are back to back if you are camping with other friends or like to meet others. There are several bathhouses scattered throughout the campground. We never had to wait for a shower stall during our trip.
